the new Ask a Manager book is an audiobook too!

One of the coolest things about the publication process for my new book, Ask a Manager: How to Navigate Clueless Colleagues, Lunch-Stealing Bosses, and the Rest of Your Life at Work, was getting to record the audiobook. I spent three days in a recording studio with an amazing director while I pretended to be Aretha Franklin, and it was great fun.

The book is all about what to say in tricky workplace conversations — and because tone matters so much, it was great to be able to demonstrate the exact tone to use in each and every example in the book.

Here’s an excerpt of the audiobook you can listen to:

Also, if you’re interested, Penguin Random House has a podcast called “This is the Author” where authors talk about their experiences recording their audiobooks. Here’s my episode (where I talk about the names in the book, words I realized I was mispronouncing, and more).

Will you be continuing your podcast? I know you took some time off to do book stuff.

I bought both the audio and paperback. I listened to all 6+ hours while on a business road trip the day it was released. Awesome book.

I’m on the waiting list at the library for the downloadable audiobook on Overdrive. Currently #5 on the waiting list!

This is so cool! One of the best things about your conversations on Marketplace Weekend has been just that: how to find the right tone. Your “firm but kind” is one I keep pointing women too.

Oh, the audiobook is available in New Zealand now as well. My procrastination on ordering the physical book has paid off! Got this queued up now to start listening to on my next walk.

I finished the audiobook last week – it’s wonderful! It really is the perfect medium for you, Alison. Not only do we benefit from your carefully curated wording for all manner of awkward circumstances, you’ve given us a demo of the right tone, too. Thank you!

Hurray audiobook!!! Best way to be able to be a functioning adult and still be able to read as much as I need to.

Oh no! I can’t listen to this. In my head, you have a New Zealand accent – and that’s the way it’s got to stay.

Yay! This will sound creepy, but I love your voice. This is awesome. Congratulations!
