Written from my perspective as a long-time hiring manager, this e-book gives you step-by-step guidance through every stage of your job search … explaining at each step what a hiring manager is thinking and what they want to see from you … from getting noticed initially, to nailing the interview, to navigating the tricky post-interview period, all the way through your offer. I bugged him for over a week about reading your guide and he ignored me. Yesterday, I twisted his arm and finally got him to read it. He liked the advice so much he read it a second time. He really took it seriously and followed all of the advice you gave … He just called me to tell me the interview was done and that it had been the best interview he had ever had.” — Kim J. “I used to have 50/50 luck getting past phone interviews and into the actual in-person interview. Once I read your book, I went 100% in getting past the phone interview, and I was ALWAYS in the top running for every position since then. I absolutely know it was because of your advice in the book. I could just feel the quality of my interviews go up exponentially after I read it.” — Russell B. “When I first got to the interview and saw the interview questions (they had them written out for me), I thought they had taken their questions right from your guide!” — Becky N. “I just received an offer for an excellent position, and your advice helped me clinch it. I never had a more relaxed interview, and my interviewers were all smiles the entire time. I literally had an offer before I made it back to my car.” — Kat S. Eric* January 7, 2015 at 10:10 am Just out of curiosity are all the opinions in this book your own, or do you have multiple sources and points of view for certain topics?
BRR* January 7, 2015 at 10:22 am As a recent grad this book helped me understand the hiring process since they don’t teach you this in college. This is a great gift for students or recent grads. I always feel like I owe Alison a commission for helping me get my job because of this book.
ali* January 7, 2015 at 10:25 am I’m not looking and don’t intend to be any time soon, but I’m going to pick this up for future reference. Thanks Alison!
Dana* January 7, 2015 at 10:37 am I’m not looking but I’m going to grab this for my husband! Thanks for the deal.
Ask a Manager* Post authorJanuary 7, 2015 at 11:35 am There’s new content in the book that isn’t on the site, although of course there’s some overlap — it’s a guide to job searching, which is a topic I cover here a lot so there are some consistencies between the two! There’s a lot of extra stuff with the book though, including a couple of recorded webinars with me answering people’s questions (as bonus content).
BRR* January 7, 2015 at 11:50 am It’s also really well organized where as on the site the advice is posted related to when a question is asked.
matcha123* January 7, 2015 at 10:46 am I’d love to read it, but do you have any other options besides PayPal? :)
ThursdaysGeek* January 7, 2015 at 1:29 pm Urg yes. I started to sign up with paypal, and was willing to give a credit card number. But when they also wanted a bank account number I decided I would just have to live without anything that had to be bought using it. I think the book could be a good gift, but not if I have to use paypal to get it. :(
Ask a Manager* Post authorJanuary 7, 2015 at 1:50 pm Hmmm, are you sure it was required? I just tried to do it without using a Paypal account and just a credit card number and it allowed me, without asking for bank account info (which I agree would be over the top). After you enter the credit card info, it’ll ask you if you want to create a Paypal account — you just need to select “no thanks” and it should move ahead without it.
ThursdaysGeek* January 7, 2015 at 7:17 pm Ah, perhaps I was confused by the wording, since “paypal account” is what I thought I needed in order to use paypal. Maybe I’ll give it another try, since the book would be a nice gift for someone right now. Or, as you say below, just use a credit card number.
Ask a Manager* Post authorJanuary 7, 2015 at 1:51 pm You can use a credit card without a Paypal account (although it’s processed through Paypal — but you don’t need an account with them).
matcha123* January 8, 2015 at 10:17 am No, option for not signing up for PayPal for me (outside of the US). And using my card number with a US address doesn’t work either. Will ask my sister next time. I do have a PayPal account, but it doesn’t recognize my credit card, even though I followed their directions for the things. And the only option for the country I’m in now is to sign up for a PayPal account. Darn. Next time!
Ask a Manager* Post authorJanuary 8, 2015 at 12:13 pm Hmmm, it must be something about buying outside the U.S.!
KC* January 7, 2015 at 10:47 am bought it and forgot to use the discount… facepalm. did the same thing yesterday paying for parking twice…
k* January 7, 2015 at 10:54 am Do you have a printed book available? I understand the discount would not apply if so.
Agile Phalanges* January 7, 2015 at 4:20 pm You can print the PDF, but of course you incur the cost of the paper and toner/ink…
Elena* January 7, 2015 at 11:03 am Excellent timing, as I’ve just been considering purchasing this for my next job search!
Hlyssande* January 7, 2015 at 11:10 am I just bought this book too. Thank you for offering the discount. It’s time to get myself in order and move on and this should be a great help.
C Average* January 7, 2015 at 11:19 am I love this book! If you are thinking about getting this book, stop dithering and just do it. You know how there are people you spend time with and you walk away energized and inspired to take action? Reading Alison’s book was like spending several hours with such a person. After reading the last page I nuked the current version of my resume and rewrote it from scratch. I took a different approach to my cover letters. I renewed some old friendships for general networking purposes. And I’ve developed a better attitude at the less-than-perfect job I’m still stuck at while I’m looking. I was not paid to write this, by the way. :)
Oops* January 7, 2015 at 11:21 am I just bought this thinking it was an actual hardcopy book. Reading comprehension fail.
Apple22over7* January 7, 2015 at 11:28 am This is great timing, I’m just about to start a jobsearch (90% chance I’ll be laid off within 6 months.. urgh). Thanks Alison!
BRR* January 7, 2015 at 11:51 am Aww I’m really sorry, that sucks. Start looking now, it’s easier to find a job when you have a job. Good luck!
Laurel Gray* January 7, 2015 at 11:36 am I don’t mean to come off dense, but what format does this e-book come in? Is it something that I can access via iBooks on my MacBook Pro? My toddler decepticon destroyed my iPad and I am curious if I can have access to this on my laptop and when I am offline.
Ask a Manager* Post authorJanuary 7, 2015 at 12:00 pm It’s a PDF so you can read it anywhere you can read a PDF — Kindle, iPad, iBooks, Mac, PC, etc. So for your situation: Yes, you could read it on iBooks. Also, there’s about to be an epub version soon.
Mal* January 7, 2015 at 12:11 pm It’s like a PDF, but not…? Mine is just in a folder on my desktop and I can double click to read like a PDF, it’s not online. Also. Toddler Decepticon. Love it.
Hermoine Granger* January 7, 2015 at 11:52 am This is great, I’m currently job searching. I have an interview tomorrow and planned to spend much of today preparing with your interview e-guide. This book will help with the job search whole process. Thanks for the discount!
Juniperloki* January 7, 2015 at 12:09 pm Thank goodness! Thank you thank you thank you. I read your blog religiously and encourage others to do the same.
Stryker* January 7, 2015 at 1:43 pm This book helped me land my dream job. I’m tempted to buy a copy for a friend of mine, struggling for work. Seriously, it’s that good.
periwinkle* January 7, 2015 at 2:34 pm Seconded. I attribute landing my current amazing job to a combination of the wisdom distilled into this book, the conversations on the site, and perhaps a smidgen of personal awesomeness. Just a smidgen, though.
nicolefromqueens* January 7, 2015 at 2:25 pm Thank you. Is this the same ebook you put on discount during the fall?
LiteralGirl* January 7, 2015 at 3:49 pm I bought this a couple of years ago; has the content changed at all?
Ask a Manager* Post authorJanuary 7, 2015 at 3:57 pm I’ve made small updates, but if you already have a copy from a few years ago, it definitely wouldn’t make sense to buy one again!
Dwight K Schrute* January 7, 2015 at 7:39 pm Thank you! This will definitely help with my 2015 work goals.
Sunny* January 7, 2015 at 8:05 pm Thanks! I was on the fence about buying the book and you just tipped it. Your advice when I signed up helped me be a finalist for the last job I interviewed for. Thanks!
JJ* January 7, 2015 at 10:31 pm Just wanted to pop in and say this book helped me land a job at the FIRST place I interviewed after graduating grad school (and the interview requests were still rolling in weeks after I accepted this position). The interview section really, really helped a lot and I think my now-supervisor was taken aback and impressed with the questions I asked. My resume was also 150% better than the version I probably would have sent had I not read the book or become an avid reader of this blog. My fiance is currently on the job hunt, and I know this book helped him tremendously as well. Thanks, Alison!
