I’m extending the special sales price on How to Get a Job until Friday by Alison Green on September 1, 2010 By request, I’m extending the special sales price on my new e-book, How to Get a Job: Secrets of a Hiring Manager, through Friday. It’ll stay at $14.95 — a 40% discount — until the end of the day Friday. By the way, a few people have asked me to explain e-books. You don’t need a Kindle or an “e-book reader” to read it. It’ll come to you in a PDF, so you can read it on your computer, your phone, or anywhere else you read files. And I don’t want you to feel this purchase is a risk, so I’m offering a no-questions-asked 30-day money-back guarantee. In this book, I set out to give you an inside look at a hiring manager’s brain, so that you can have an insider helping you every step of the way through your job search. You can read the whole description of the book here, or buy it here: And last note before we return to our regular programming — I want your feedback, so please let me know how you like it! Anonymous* September 1, 2010 at 4:21 pm I'm still just thinking about buying your e-book. Fifteen dollars is a HUGE investment for me right now. And I still can't shake the feeling that you've already posted some of the content you mentioned in the original post on this site. Is that all that's in it or is there more? If there's more, could you post a full contents page (or maybe a full list of headers) to further convince me? I know there's a 30-day guarantee, but it just doesn't exactly sit well with my conscience to buy the e-book and then demand a refund if I was at least partially satisfied. And part of me KNOWS it's going to be too good for that anyway. But then, there's the budget-er in me telling me I can't afford it…
Anonymous* September 1, 2010 at 4:36 pm Eww. Yeah, I don't trust PayPal ever since some kid in Denmark hacked it to steal $80+ from my bank account in Euros. Any other option(s)? And have you thought of maybe trying to put it on Amazon? I've never had any trouble with them.
Ask a Manager* September 1, 2010 at 4:56 pm Anonymous at 12:21: If it helps make up your mind, the feedback I'm getting is super positive — check out the two quotes on the initial sales page, plus the comments that have been left there. But you definitely have the option of just reading through the loads of free content on this site! That's worth way more than $15 in itself. But there's also plenty of new content in the book, as well as expansion on older topics. And there are also some "bonuses" that everyone who bought the book is going to get (some pretty cool recorded webinars, which I'll be announcing later this week and sending to everyone who has purchased it before then). But my site will still be here if you prefer to just use that. Other Anonymouses: You don't need to use a paypal account — you can pay by credit card. When you get to the first payment screen, there's an option on the left side that says "Don't have a PayPal account? Use your credit or debit card to pay." That's what you want to use.
Anonymous* September 1, 2010 at 5:10 pm If Alison posted the book for sale on Amazon, the cost of the book would more than double to cover the cost of hosting with them. I've looked into it for my own stuff and it doesn't make financial sense for ebooks.
Anonymous* September 1, 2010 at 9:40 pm Any chance you can publish this as a regular book? It's kind of costly right now to pay for the download and then try to print it out (I'll be one of the last to move over to reading books online or of the Kindle/Nook generation). I can see an "Ask a Manager" series! However, you're definitely owed many kudos for helping those out there.
Ask a Manager* September 1, 2010 at 9:44 pm It's just available in e-book form — but just to be clear, you don't need a kindle to read it. You can read it right on your laptop or desktop screen like a regular document … or like a really, really, really long blog post. (I think you might be saying that you don't like reading stuff on a computer at all. In which case, I say: Find me a publisher!)
OmarF* September 2, 2010 at 1:22 am Well I just bought. I've been appreciating your down to earth style for some time now. I'm not currently in the job market, but I have a daughter who is, and I don't know what advice to give. Also, I'm getting more involved in the hiring process, so find it nice to know what best practices in the hiring process are. Anyway, thanks for all your efforts. Now I need to get to some reading.
Ask a Manager* September 2, 2010 at 1:23 am Omar, that is nice of you to say! I'm going to email you something else that might help on the hiring side.
Shoshanna* September 4, 2010 at 4:16 am Hi, I wish you'd been more specific about when the "end of the day Friday" was. I didn't get to read this post until 11:15 pm Central time Friday, September 3, and when I clicked Add to Cart, I got the regular price ($24.95). I guess it is already Saturday on the East Coast.
Ask a Manager* September 4, 2010 at 4:31 am Shoshana, email me and I'll send you a discount code to get the sale price! (askamanager@gmail.com)
Ask a Manager* September 4, 2010 at 4:34 am Actually, in case anyone else is in the same boat, I've switched the price back to the sales price and will leave it like that for a few more hours. Try it now!
Shoshanna* September 4, 2010 at 4:57 am Thanks Alison, for extending the deal for those of us not in Eastern time! I just bought the book! And I'm not even looking for a job, but I want to be able to pass on advice to my students who are. (I'll also recommend they buy the ebook themselves, of course!) I'm looking forward to reading it over the long weekend!
